Ukraine has clearly become highly skilled in drone technology. Recent reports described how it used a swarm of drones to attack enemy infrastructure—not merely a collection of drones, but a self-steering swarm without a single leader, much like a flock of starlings. The drones are programmed to cooperate by monitoring nearby drones and rapidly adjusting their behavior through statistical and mathematical models. As a group, they identify the best path forward quickly, finding the strongest average solution while avoiding obstacles, responding to weather conditions, and continuing toward a shared target. What is especially interesting is how the swarm reasons, reaches consensus, and is trained to do so. Quote: “Using distributed decision-making, the swarm agrees on goals. If one drone fails or encounters an obstacle, the remaining drones automatically reallocate tasks—such as search patterns or area coverage—among themselves without human intervention.”

What can we learn from this?

I see this as a powerful metaphor for managing a modern company—or, even better, an enterprise ecosystem. A company is more than its legal entity; it depends on a network of suppliers, customers, and partners. In that sense, it functions like a swarm. First, the ecosystem needs a shared goal: an innovation program that is jointly owned and executed. Second, it needs common algorithms, dynamic parameters, and scorecards that help the group interpret changing conditions quickly. These mechanisms must be formally agreed, embedded in contracts, programmed into ways of working, and clearly communicated. Third, the group should operate as a smart network of stakeholders and teams that can respond rapidly to alerts and support distributed decision-making.

I believe that AI can support such a network to be fast and focused, and controlled. New innovation governance methods should help to get there.
